Can You Take an Electric Moped Bike on a Plane?Updated 3 months ago

Lithium Battery Restrictions for U.S. Air Travel

If you're planning to travel with your Ariel Rider electric Moped Bike, it's important to understand the restrictions surrounding lithium-ion batteries on U.S. flights. Unfortunately, carrying your battery in either checked or carry-on luggage is typically not allowed.

The FAA permits passengers to bring lithium-ion batteries of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) in their carry-on luggage. In some cases, exceptions can be made for batteries up to 160Wh if they are part of specific devices like medical equipment. However, no spare batteries larger than 100Wh are allowed in carry-ons.

For checked luggage, batteries must be attached to a device and cannot exceed 100Wh. Spare lithium-ion batteries are not allowed in checked bags at all.

Since most Ariel Rider batteries far exceed this 100Wh limit, you'll need alternative options for transporting your battery when flying.

Calculating Watt-Hours

To calculate watt-hours (Wh) for your Ariel Rider bike battery, multiply the voltage (V) by the amp-hours (Ah). For example, a 48V battery rated at 14Ah would be:

48V x 14Ah = 672Wh

This is well above the FAA’s limit, so taking your battery on a flight isn’t possible.

Alternatives to Flying with Batteries

If traveling with your Ariel Rider bike is essential, consider the following options:

Shipping Electric Bike Batteries

Shipping your Ariel Rider bike battery separately to your destination may be an option. Keep in mind that lithium-ion batteries are classified as hazardous materials and require special packaging, labeling, and handling.

You'll need to determine your battery's watt-hour rating and check with shipping carriers for their specific guidelines. Some companies allow more flexibility if you're shipping both the bike and the battery together.

Here are some resources to help navigate shipping regulations for lithium-ion batteries:

  • DHL’s “Lithium Batteries Guidance”

  • FAA’s “Interactive Guide to Shipping Lithium Batteries”

  • UPS's “How to Pack and Ship Batteries”

  • FedEx’s “Lithium Battery Shipping Overview”

  • International Air Transport Association’s “Lithium Batteries Regulations”

Ariel Rider works with shipping companies that handle battery shipments safely, ensuring that your bike arrives intact. If you're placing a new order, your Ariel Rider bike battery will be shipped with your bike, allowing hassle-free delivery. However, we do not offer international shipments.
