Gears are shifting on their own mid rideUpdated 3 days ago
If your gears are shifting on their own, that is without you shifting them, it is a sign that your drivetrain needs to be adjusted.
To adjust this you will need a Phillips head screw driver.
Adjusting the Rear Derailleur On Shimano 7-Speed gear shifter
The goal here is to ensure the chain moves smoothly across the cassette without jumping or making noise.
1. Set the Limit Screws
The limit screws (labeled H and L) prevent the chain from falling off the gears into the frame or the spokes.
High Limit (H): Shift to the smallest cog. The guide pulley (the top wheel on the derailleur) should be directly centered under the smallest cog. Turn the 'H' screw clockwise to move it inward, counter-clockwise to move it out.
Low Limit (L): Shift to the largest cog. The guide pulley should be centered directly under that cog. Turn the 'L' screw to align it.
2. Adjust Cable Tension (Indexing)
This is where most "ghost shifting" or clicking happens.
Shift the chain to a middle cog.
Pedal the bike. If the chain wants to jump to a larger cog, the tension is too tight; turn the barrel adjuster (the plastic knob where the cable enters the derailleur) clockwise.
If the chain is hesitant to shift up to a larger cog, the tension is too loose; turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise.
