How to Bed In Your E-Bike Brakes
Bedding in new brake pads and rotors transfers a thin layer of pad material onto the rotor surface. This essential process maximizes stopping power, eliminates squealing, and ensures smooth, consistent braking performance.
Important: Always turn off and power cycle your e-bike before making any mechanical adjustments or repairs.
Step-by-Step Bedding Procedure
- Power down: Turn off the display and remove the battery. Power cycle the system to discharge any remaining electrical current.
- Find a safe location: Choose a flat, open area with minimal traffic and zero obstacles (such as a clean parking lot).
- Pre-check: Confirm your tires are inflated to 30 PSI and that your brake rotors and pads are clean and free of oil or debris.
- Warm up the pads: Ride at a slow speed and gently squeeze the brake levers a few times to bring the pads up to operating temperature.
- Accelerate: Increase your speed to approximately 15–20 mph.
- Apply moderate braking: Firmly apply both brakes evenly to slow down to about 5 mph. Do not come to a complete stop while holding the levers down, as this can cause uneven pad material transfer.
- Release and accelerate: Release the brake levers and accelerate back up to 15–20 mph.
- Repeat: Perform steps 5 through 7 for 10–15 cycles.
- Cool down: Allow the brakes to air-cool by coasting for 2–3 minutes.
- Harder bedding cycles: Repeat steps 5 through 7 for another 10 cycles, this time applying firmer lever pressure (slowing down quickly from 20 mph to 5 mph without locking up the wheels or coming to a complete stop).
- Final cool down: Let the rotors cool completely before parking or riding aggressively.
- Test: Conduct a final test ride. Your brakes should now feel smooth, quiet, and responsive.
