How to Separate Closed Brake Pads
If you're unable to slide the brake rotor between the brake pads during wheel installation, the brake lever was likely squeezed while the wheel or pad spacer was removed. This causes the hydraulic pistons to extend and locks the pads together.
Why This Happens
- Self-adjusting hydraulic brakes: The hydraulic brakes on Ariel Rider e-bikes automatically adjust as the pads wear down by advancing the pistons outward.
- Lack of resistance: Squeezing the brake lever without a rotor or plastic transport spacer in the caliper allows the pistons to push the pads together, closing the gap needed for the rotor.
How to Fix It
- Insert a flat tool: Insert a clean, flat tool—such as a plastic tire lever or a wide flathead screwdriver—between the brake pads.
- Gently pry the pads apart: Carefully twist or lever the tool to push both pistons and pads evenly back into the caliper body.
- Reinstall the wheel: Once the gap is restored, slide the rotor into place between the pads and install the wheel as usual.
