How do I inspect my cables and connections for damage?Updated 15 days ago

When components on your electric motorized bike are not working correctly, the first troubleshooting step is to inspect the cables and electrical connections for damage. Identifying wire or pin damage is essential for diagnosing issues and getting you back on the road safely.

Watch the video below for a demonstration on inspecting your cables and connector pins, or follow the written step-by-step instructions.

SAFETY FIRST: Always perform maintenance in a well-lit environment and perform a complete Power Cycle (Dissipate Controller Energy) before disconnecting any electrical cables.

Inspection Steps

  1. Power Cycle the Bike: Turn off the bike, remove the battery, and hold the display power button for 5 to 10 seconds to dissipate remaining stored energy.
  2. Inspect Motor Cable:Pull back the protective metal spring sleeve on the motor cable to inspect where the cable enters the axle.
    • Tip: Removing the rear wheel makes inspecting the axle entrance much easier.
  3. Inspect Component Cables & Plugs:Trace the wires leading to the display, throttle, lights, and brake cutoffs for cuts, tears, or crushed insulation. Unplug each connector to check the internal pins.
    • Disconnecting: Pull connectors directly apart in a straight line. Do not twist or bend the plug casing.
    • Pin Inspection: Ensure no pins are bent, broken, pushed back, or misaligned with the female pin sleeves.
    • Reconnecting: Align the directional arrows on both plug ends and press them straight together firmly.
  4. Inspect Main Harness to Controller Connection: Trace the main wire harness down to the controller. Check the exterior cable housing for damage, then unplug the main harness connector to inspect the internal pins and sleeves.
